STRUCTWEL CONTRIBUTES IN CST CONSERVATION
|
Excerpts from MUMBAI MIRROR - a daily supplement of Times of India, dated January 20, 2007
Making CST waterproof
Every monsoon, the red-tiled roof of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) building is covered with yellow tarpaulin sheets to prevent leaking. However these sheets are an eyesore on the UNESCO-listed heritage monument.
"Before beginning the repair work, we hired conservation architects to examine the original plans of the building to avoid spoiling the structure." said CR divisional railway manager R S Virdi.
Conservation architect Chetan Raikar was one of them.
He said, "Though the tiles on the roof have been changed regularly, wooden rafters and trusses holding the tiles have not been changed since the building was constructed. Some of the wood has rooted after getting wet in rain."

PRESIDENT'S VISIT TO STRUCTWEL STALL
|
In January -February 2006, STRUCTWEL participated in an Exhibition for IN-House R&D Units conducted by Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) at Delhi. It was in the complex of Vigyan Bhavan. There were 40 stalls in all and our stall was the only stall in civil engineering.
We were grateful to Honorable Ex-President of India, Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for visiting our stall. We exhibited a large scale India map prepared in-house in tricolor concrete, that attracted the attention of Honorable President. He chatted close to five minutes with Mr. Chetan Raikar, Managing Director.
This was the only stall that was visited personally by the Honorable President and that was real reward for our R&D efforts.
